The three principles of robotics
are rules coined by science fiction writer Isaac Asimov. The rules first appeared in 1942 in Asimov’s short story “Runaround”. The three rules are:
- A robot must not harm a human being by its actions or inactions.
2. A robot must obey an order given by a human being, unless it contradicts the first law.
3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as it does not contradict the first or second law.
In addition to these three laws, Asimov later coined the zero law, which is:
- The robot must not harm humanity by its actions or omissions.
